Well, I haven't blogged in a long time. The big reason I haven't been able to blog was a big change in our lives that happened in May...May 17th to be exact. Hanna was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, 5 days after her 12th birthday. Poor girl! We were at the doctor's office when she was diagnosed and they sent us straight to the hospital emergency room. She had to stay in the hospital for 3 days and 2 nights. I slept on a very lumpy, uncomfortable pull out chair next to her bed. We spent 2 of the 3 days in classes learning how to take care of her diabetes. It was overwhelming...and I had an advantage in that my little sister has diabetes, so I knew more than the average person. Still, there was tons to learn!
When we got home, all homeschooling was over for the summer. I felt like my head might explode at any moment and numbers would fly out of my head...blood sugar numbers, insulin ratios, carb counts, etc. We were also getting up 2 times per night to check Hanna's blood sugar. Several parents with diabetic kids told me it would soon become second nature. I believed that it would, but I thought it would take a long, long time. Well, I was wrong. Probably after a month and a half, it became much easier. And after maybe 2 months, I really didn't think about it that much. It really helped that Hanna has had such a great attitude about it all and took on much of the responsibility herself. She's been amazing through this whole thing. Now we are enjoying the honeymoon phase of diabetes where the pancreas comes back and begins to make insulin again for awhile.
In the last month and a half though, we are on a new adventure related to Hanna's diabetes. But more on that later.
